Dr. Robert S. Burrell is a resilience and resistance interdisciplinary scholar using data-driven and human-centric methodologies to analyze intrastate conflict ranging from nonviolent protest through belligerency. His methodological frameworks for identifying and measuring resistance currently support ongoing special research projects at . He also serves as a 2025 fellow for the Irregular Warfare Initiative. Burrell’s disciplines include history, military science and international relations. Since 2024, he has worked as a Senior Research Fellow with Global and National Security Institute at the University of South Florida. From 2020-2024, he taught irregular warfare at Joint Special Operations University. During the years 2011-2014, he served as the U.S. Special Operations Command Editor-in-Chief for doctrine on special operations, security cooperation, unconventional warfare, counterterrorism, psychological operations, and civil military operations – overseeing joint and allied special operations canons for the Department of Defense. From 2001-2004, Burrell taught both Navy and Marine Corps history at U.S. Naval Academy, where he received multiple writing awards. A retired Marine with multiple combat tours, he is an Asia-Pacific expert with twelve years living and working in Japan, Korea, Philippines, and Thailand, as well as a diplomatic tour at the U.S. Embassy in Australia – where he directed national-strategic policies regarding the Marine Rotational Force in Darwin. He has a PhD in history from the University of Warwick and master’s degrees from San Diego State University and the U.S. Naval War College.
